Jessia Avila studies political science, marketing, and Spanish as a second- year student at McDaniel College, where she is active in the Global Fellows Program, the Model United Nations team, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. Jessia serves as an English Second Language Tutor for Palabras to Words at her campus. She works as a Support Services Aide for The Arc of Carroll County and facilitates community involvement for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a recipient of McDaniel College's Dorsey Scholarship, Jessia was granted the opportunity to study abroad in McDaniel College Europe in Budapest during her second semester of college. Her academic interests include how development, human rights, and minority groups compare and contrast at the cultural, state, regional, and global level. Jessia was selected as a fellow in the 2020 Governor's Summer Internship Program through Maryland's Public Service Scholars Programs, and she will complete her internship during Summer 2021. She hopes to foster support for marginalized and underrepresented peoples, cultivate inclusivity and accessibility within diverse communities, and promote educational advancement. Following graduation, she would like to earn a master's degree and then initiate a public service career in policymaking and community development. As a military child, Jessia currently calls Waldorf, Maryland home.
