Amanda is a Black Brazilian woman raised in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A first-generation student and the first person in her family to live/study outside of Brazil, she is now a rising senior at Macalester College in Minnesota, where she is pursuing a double major in Political Science and Environmental Studies. Amanda has lived in Brazil, Japan, and the United States, where she has dedicated herself to working for equity, racial justice, and indigenous rights. At Macalester, Amanda is the DEI coordinator at Adelante, a student-led Latino organization. She also served as the co-chair of the college's inaugural Human Rights conference, which took place in March 2024 and drew student participants from across the state of Minnesota. Her work continues outside of Macalester, from receiving opportunities to participate in the Student Energy Summit and the United Nations Environment Assembly, to sailing from Hawaii to California to research plastics. Amanda is committed to making a positive impact through intentional policymaking, addressing the intersections between environmental issues, race, and gender.
