Professor Brickhouse specializes in early American and nineteenth-century US literature in the context of the wider Americas. Her first book, Transamerican Literary Relations and the Nineteenth-Century Public Sphere (Cambridge 2004), was awarded the Gustave O. Arlt Award in the Humanities from the Council of Graduate Schools as well as Honorable Mention for the ASA’s Laura Romero prize. Her second book, The Unsettlement of America (Oxford 2014), was awarded the James Russell Lowell prize by the Modern Language Association, the Early American Literature prize by the Society of Early Americanists, and Honorable Mention for the John Hope Franklin Publication Prize by the Association of American Studies. She is currently completing a third book on earthquakes and the literary imagination of catastrophe in the Americas. Her work has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies and the Guggenheim Foundation.
